Rail Spring Karkhana
The Rail Spring Karkhana unit, commonly known as RSK, is one of the important production units of Indian Railways. This is located in Gwalior city of Madhya Pradesh state. This unit specialises in manufacturing springs for coaching stock and locomotives.
This unit is very high in terms of all quality standards and it has received various certifications like IMS (Integrated Management System) which comes under ISO 9001:2008, Environmental quality that comes under the ISO 14001:2004 and awards for Occupational Health and Safety under ISO 18001:2007.
The Rail Spring Karkhana unit is situated at a distance of around 13km from the main city of Gwalior and quite near to the rail station at Sithouli. The main objective of this unit is manufacturing springs made of hot coil. These springs are then put to use in the rolling stock that is produced for the railways. This unit was set up with Railway Board’s approval in 1989. The foundation stone for this particular unit was laid by the Gwalior MP, late Madhav Rao Scindia. This is the biggest unit for manufacturing helical hot coil springs in India. During 1989, it was set up as a joint effort with the German company, M/s. Grueber, one of the global leaders in manufacturing rail springs in the country. All technical aspects of RSK are as result of joint efforts from this German company.
This unit was set up at a cost of 54.04 crores INR. This is one of those units that is technologically sophisticated and contains furnaces that are LPG fired. This unit was inaugurated in 1990 by the then Railway Minister, George Fernandes. Mr. Venkatraman was the initial head of the Karkhana unit and he was the first Chief Project Manager of the unit and later went on to take the role of Chief Workshop Manager.
The coil manufacturing unit at this place has lots of advanced features that are technologically brilliant in order to produce FIAT Bogie Springs for LHB coaches. The manufacture of units in the RSK was a result of joint efforts from Poland based industry leader, M/s Bumar and their Indian representative, M/s PCI Limited. These technical coiling units have been frequently used by the production units for manufacturing.
Due to the new FIAT coiling system that has been used under the able guidance of RDSO, the RSK unit has been designing and manufacturing high-quality fiat springs. The fiat springs that are manufactured here are then delivered to the Railway Coach Factory at Kapurthala, only after passing through all quality standards and safety procedures.
